The streamlined shape of swimming beavers shows how well adapted they are for their environment and occupation.
Mud and grass are held in place with two fists under the chin. Alternate strokes from the hind feet produce a top speed
of about 6 mpg, or simultaneous ones give a steady relaxed 2 mph. The notched tail that was the result of a logging accident is being used as a rudder to prevent the middle beaver from going in
circles.
